What the Record Shows on Toyota RAV4 Best Years

On Toyota RAV4 best years, the public record is Transport Canada's recall database, and it ranks nothing. When we searched it on September 17, 2026, it listed six recalls naming the 2019 RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid, five for 2020, one for 2021, one for the 2022 RAV4 Hybrid only, two for 2023, and three each for 2024 and 2025.

Our search for the gas 2022 RAV4 found no recall. New recalls can be added after the date we searched, which is why the VIN check comes last, right before you buy.

A count of recalls is not a reliability score. A year with more notices is a year to check more carefully by VIN, not a year to write off.

The record also does not show repair costs, failure rates, or how any one RAV4 was driven and maintained. Service records and an inspection answer those.

Toyota Canada introduced the 2019 RAV4 as its fifth generation and describes the 2026 model as "the all-new 6th generation RAV4", so 2019 to 2025 is one generation. Older RAV4s, the RAV4 Prime and the new generation are outside this guide.

Where the Toyota RAV4 Is Good on Leeds and Grenville Roads

Toyota Canada's own announcements give the 2019 to 2025 RAV4 real strengths. Its announcement for every one of those model years lists Toyota Safety Sense, and it describes every RAV4 Hybrid as all-wheel drive for 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

For a driver who wants predictable, low-risk transportation on rural roads, those are features worth having, and they come from Toyota's own information rather than from us.

Toyota Canada said "The 2019 RAV4 is equipped with the second generation of Toyota Safety Sense (TSS 2.0)", and that "Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) is standard on all models."

Its 2020 announcement lists "the Toyota Star Safety System, the Blind Spot Monitor System with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, eight airbags, a backup camera and a tire pressure monitoring system" among the other standard safety features.

For 2023, Toyota Canada wrote that "all models are enhanced with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5", and its 2024 and 2025 announcements list Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 again.

On a dark concession road, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and a backup camera are the kind of help a driver uses every day, not once a year.

For winter traction, Toyota Canada's 2019 announcement says Multi-Terrain Select is "Standard on all AWD-equipped gas RAV4 models" and helps drivers "maximize traction when driving through mud, sand, rocks, dirt and snow."

For 2020, it says "All RAV4 Hybrid models feature the added confidence of all-wheel-drive (AWD)."

Toyota Canada's 2023 announcement adds that "every RAV4 has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility". Its 2025 announcement says "RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid models are built in Canada".

For 2020 hybrids, Toyota Canada announced it would extend its hybrid battery warranty to "10 years from date of first use, or 240,000 km, whichever comes first", and said the extension "is valid for all model year 2020 Toyota hybrid electric vehicles."

Whether a particular 2020 RAV4 Hybrid is still inside it depends on its in-service date and distance, so ask for the documents before you buy.

None of that makes any used RAV4 a sure thing, and none of the recalls makes one a bad buy. It makes the individual vehicle the thing to check.

The Toyota RAV4 Year by Year From 2019 to 2025

Each RAV4 model year below lists the recalls Transport Canada published for it, quoted from the notices, with what Toyota Canada publishes about that year.

Read Toyota RAV4 best years as a checklist, not a verdict. Nearly every recall below applies only to certain vehicles, and the VIN check tells you whether it applies to yours.

2019 Toyota RAV4

When we searched Transport Canada's database, it listed six recalls naming the 2019 RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid. The 2019 was the first model year of the fifth generation.

Each recall below applies only to certain vehicles, or for the block heater recall to certain kits, so run the VIN to see which apply to yours:

• Recall 2019-360, brakes, RAV4 Hybrid only. A defect "could cause the brake booster pump to fail", which "could result in a loss of braking assist."

  
  

• Recall 2019-382, backup camera, RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid. The connector for the audio display unit "may have been damaged during assembly", which could stop the backup camera turning on in reverse.

  
  

• Recall 2020-039, engine, for vehicles with a 2.5-L 4-cylinder engine only. The notice reads "On certain vehicles equipped with a 2.5-L 4-cylinder engine, the engine block may be porous."

2020 Toyota RAV4

When we searched, the database listed five recalls naming the 2020 RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid, and three of them also name the 2019.

Each recall below applies only to certain vehicles, so run the VIN to see which apply to yours:

• Recall 2020-039, engine block, for vehicles with a 2.5-L 4-cylinder engine only.

2021 Toyota RAV4

When we searched, the database listed one recall naming the 2021 RAV4 or RAV4 Hybrid. It is recall 2023-684, the passenger airbag sensor recall on certain vehicles, and it names both the RAV4 and the RAV4 Hybrid.

Toyota Canada's 2021 announcement says "A long list of standard safety systems starts with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0". It lists front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive gas models, and all-wheel-drive RAV4 Hybrid models.

2022 Toyota RAV4

When we searched, the database found no recall for the gas 2022 RAV4 and one for the 2022 RAV4 Hybrid. That RAV4 Hybrid recall, 2022-179, describes a problem that occurs under certain conditions.

The notice reads "Under certain conditions, the vehicle stability control (VSC) system may not switch on when the ignition is restarted." The fix is to "update the skid control ECU software".

Toyota Canada's 2022 announcement keeps Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 among the standard safety systems, lists the RAV4 LE in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and names the SE Hybrid as new for 2022.

2023 Toyota RAV4

When we searched, the database listed two recalls naming the 2023 RAV4, and both are software problems limited to vehicles with certain equipment.

Here is each one, with the limits its notice sets:

• Recall 2025-469, instrument display, on certain vehicles with a 12.3-inch display only. The notice says "This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a 12.3-inch display", and the fix is a software update at a dealership or, for "certain eligible vehicles", over the air.

  
  

• Recall 2025-594, rearview camera, on certain vehicles with a panoramic view monitor system only. The notice says "This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with a panoramic view monitor system", and describes a problem that occurs under certain conditions.

  
  

These notices list the RAV4. If the 2023 you are looking at is a RAV4 Hybrid, run its VIN to see whether either applies.

Toyota Canada says "all models are enhanced with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5" for 2023, and that "All models feature all wheel drive".

2024 Toyota RAV4

When we searched, the database listed three recalls naming the 2024 RAV4. Each one limits itself to a small number of vehicles or to certain vehicles with certain equipment.

Here is each one, with the limits its notice sets:

• Recall 2024-737, front brakes and wheel hubs, on a small number of vehicles only. The bolts that secure the front brake caliper mounting brackets and wheel hubs to the steering knuckles "may not have been tightened properly."

2025 Toyota RAV4

When we searched, the database listed three recalls naming the 2025 RAV4, and it is the newest year here, with the least time on the road for recalls to be published.

Here is each one, with the limits its notice sets:

• Recall 2025-469, instrument display, on certain vehicles with a 12.3-inch display only.

  
  

• Recall 2025-594, rearview camera, on certain vehicles with a panoramic view monitor system only, for a problem that occurs under certain conditions.

  
  

• Recall 2026-201, front seats, on certain vehicles. The brackets that secure the driver and front passenger seats "may not have been welded properly."

  
  

These notices list the RAV4, so on a 2025 RAV4 Hybrid, run the VIN to see which apply.

Toyota Canada's 2025 announcement lists every gas grade as an all-wheel-drive grade, from the LE AWD to the Limited AWD, and describes all RAV4 Hybrid models as all-wheel drive.

Gas or Hybrid, Front-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive for Elizabethtown-Kitley Winters

Which drivetrain a used RAV4 has depends on its year and version, so check it on the vehicle. Toyota Canada offered the gas RAV4 in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive for 2019 to 2021, and describes all 2023 models and every RAV4 Hybrid for 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025 as all-wheel drive.

On rural Elizabethtown-Kitley roads before the plow has been through, that difference decides which RAV4 belongs on your shortlist.

All-wheel drive helps a RAV4 get moving on a snowy side road. It does not help it stop or steer, which is the job of the tires, so the tires matter as much as the drivetrain.

Toyota Canada's warranty booklets for the 2020 to 2025 model years list a Hybrid Battery Warranty of 120 months or 240,000 km, whichever occurs first, subject to the conditions each booklet sets out.

Toyota Canada's 2019 booklet covers the HV battery under Hybrid-related Components for 96 months or 160,000 km, whichever occurs first.

On any used RAV4 Hybrid, ask for its warranty documents and its in-service date, which the 2020 to 2025 booklets say may be earlier than the date of sale.

How to Check a Used RAV4 for Recalls by VIN

Check a used RAV4 in two places before you buy. Toyota Canada tells Canadian customers to check a vehicle's recall status at toyota.ca/recall by "entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)", and Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database gives each notice in its own words.

Toyota Canada says the inspection or repair required under a Safety Recall Campaign "will be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner."

Its page also describes two other kinds of program. A Limited Service Campaign offers an inspection or repair "at no charge for a limited period of time" for "a non-safety product or technical issue", and a Warranty Enhancement Program extends coverage on "a vehicle component".

Ask whether either applies to the RAV4 you are considering, along with its recall status.

The 2023 to 2025 notices list the RAV4. On a RAV4 Hybrid from those years, the VIN check is how you find out which recalls apply.

Nearly every notice in this guide says owners will be notified by mail or in writing and asked to take the vehicle to a dealership. Recall 2025-469, on certain vehicles with a 12.3-inch display only, adds a wireless update for "certain eligible vehicles".

Recall 2019-382, on certain 2019 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles, mails owners instructions to inspect the backup camera themselves, and owners uncomfortable doing that can have a dealer inspect it. The notice says the audio display unit "will be replaced with a new one if necessary."

What an Ontario Dealer Must Disclose in Writing

In Ontario, OMVIC's Disclosures Guideline says dealers and salespeople must disclose material facts about the vehicles "even if the consumer does not ask." It describes a material fact as information that "might affect the consumer's decision".

It also says "Providing disclosure verbally does not meet the requirements of the Act." Ask for the disclosures in writing, then run the VIN yourself.

What a Safety Standards Certificate Does and Does Not Tell You

Ontario's page says a Safety Standards Certificate "confirms that your vehicle met the minimum safety standards on the date the certificate was issued." It also says "It is not a warranty or guarantee of the vehicle's condition."

Treat it as the minimum, not as an inspection of how a RAV4 has handled its winters.

What to Inspect on a Used RAV4 After Salted Winters

After winters on salted Leeds and Grenville roads, check a used RAV4's underbody and brake lines, its brakes, its block heater, its drivetrain and its tires, alongside its recall record.

That list is our advice from an Eastern Ontario dealership, not a Toyota or Transport Canada finding, and it is not a claim about how RAV4s in particular hold up.

Underbody, Brake Lines and Wheel Wells

Slush off salted roads collects under the body and in the wheel wells. Look underneath with a good light, or on a hoist, before you look at the paint.

What to look at:

• Brake lines and their fittings along the underbody.

  
  

• The subframe, suspension mounts and control arms.

  
  

• The inner wheel wells and the rocker panels.

  
  

• Exhaust hangers and heat shields.

  
  

Light surface rust on underbody parts is normal on a vehicle that has lived here. Flaking, soft or holed metal on a brake or structural part is not.

Brakes

Check the pads, the rotor surfaces and the parking brake, and ask when the brakes were last serviced. Brakes on a vehicle driven through salt and gravel deserve a hands-on look, not a glance through the wheel.

On a 2024 RAV4, check whether recall 2024-737, on a small number of vehicles only, applies and is closed. That notice concerns bolts that "may not have been tightened properly", not wear from winter roads.

On a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid, do the same for recall 2019-360, the brake booster pump recall on certain RAV4 Hybrid vehicles only.

The Block Heater

Block heaters are common on vehicles that spend their winters around Brockville, so ask whether a 2019 RAV4 has a Toyota block heater kit fitted. Recall 2021-723 names the RAV4, not the RAV4 Hybrid, and applies only to certain block heater kits with listed part numbers, installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories.

Toyota Canada's recall page says "If your vehicle is subject to one of those recalls, stop using your block heater immediately." The VIN check tells you whether it is.

Confirm the Drivetrain

Toyota Canada offered the gas RAV4 in front-wheel drive as well as all-wheel drive for 2019 to 2021, and listed the 2022 LE in both. On any used RAV4, confirm the drivetrain from the vehicle's own documents or a VIN decode, not from a listing headline.

Winter Tires

Look at the tires the RAV4 will wear on its first icy morning with you, not only the tread on the set it came in on. Ask whether a second set of wheels and winter tires comes with it.

A Test Drive and a Pre-Purchase Inspection

Drive it on the roads you actually use, including a stretch of the 401 at highway speed, and watch the dash from the moment it starts.

On certain 2020 and 2021 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles, recall 2023-684 says the airbag indicator light would display "passenger airbag off" even with a passenger seated.

On certain 2019 and 2020 vehicles with a 2.5-L 4-cylinder engine, recall 2020-039 says the problem "may lead to engine noise, smoke, cause warning lights to turn on". If you hear or see either, get the VIN checked before the conversation goes any further.

Then have a technician look it over before you sign, and get the findings in writing.

Throughout his career, Kerry has always been actively involved in staff coaching and in understanding customer wants and needs, helping ensure the businesses he works with continue to adapt to what customers are truly looking for.

One of the most exciting chapters of his career has been the shift into modern automotive marketing, embracing new technology, transparent pricing, customer-first inventory strategies, and new ways to create a better vehicle-shopping experience.

Kerry has completed extensive automotive training, including certification through the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council, involvement with the Used Car Dealers Association of Ontario, Canadian automotive dealer training, and multiple customer service courses.

Born and raised on a farm, Kerry has always valued family, hard work, and a practical, down-to-earth approach. Joining Heighton Automotive Group and working alongside Thomas Heighton and family, along with managing partners Kyle Lothian and Martin Gougeon, has allowed him to bring those same values into the car business. It has also allowed Kerry to continue following a simple philosophy: treat every customer exactly the way he would want to be treated.
