Mazda CX-5 Reliability by Year for a Used 2020 to 2025 CX-5 in Brockville, Ontario

Mazda CX-5 reliability by year has a short, honest answer. When we searched Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database on September 18, 2026, it listed no recalls for the 2020 to 2025 Mazda CX-5.

What does change by year is the equipment Mazda Canada published, above all whether a 2020 or 2021 CX-5 has all-wheel drive.

If you are choosing a used CX-5 before the first snowfall, for the daily 401 run from Brockville, Ontario, to Kingston, this guide gives you that record and those facts year by year.

It uses Transport Canada's database and Mazda Canada's own published information, not third-party reliability scores or rankings.

Older CX-5s from before 2020 and the all-new 2026 generation are outside this guide.

It comes from a Ford dealership that also sells pre-owned vehicles of other makes, so it says where the CX-5 is good as plainly as where to look closely.

The team at Brockville Ford on Eleanor Street would rather you drive home in the right used SUV, CX-5 or Ford, than the wrong one.

Key Takeaways

  • When we searched Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database on September 18, 2026, it listed no recalls for the 2020 to 2025 Mazda CX-5. That is a dated search result, not a reliability verdict, so check the individual CX-5 by VIN.

  • Mazda Canada made i-Activ AWD standard on every CX-5 from 2022. A 2020 or 2021 CX-5 GX or GS may be front-wheel drive, so confirm the drivetrain on that vehicle.

  • Mazda Canada's 2021, 2024 and 2025 announcements list i-Activsense safety features as standard, and its 2021.5 update added more of them to the GX.

  • Mazda's CX-5 owner's manual warns that road salt left on the underbody will "speed up rusting and deterioration" of parts such as the fuel lines and frame. Have the underbody inspected on any used CX-5 that has lived through Eastern Ontario winters.

  • Browse our pre-owned inventory and drive a CX-5 or a Ford on the roads you actually commute.

What the Recall Record Shows on Mazda CX-5 Reliability by Year

On Mazda CX-5 reliability by year, the public record is Transport Canada's recall database, and it ranks nothing. When we searched Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database on September 18, 2026, it listed no recalls for the 2020 to 2025 Mazda CX-5.

That is a dated search result, not a reliability verdict, so check the individual CX-5 by VIN.

Mazda Canada says a vehicle or component "may be recalled to address a defect related to safety, emissions, regulatory compliance, or customer satisfaction." An empty recall list says nothing about repair costs, wear, or how one CX-5 was driven and maintained.

Service records and an inspection answer those. New recalls can be added after the date we searched, which is why the VIN check comes last, right before you buy.

Transport Canada's database is a list of safety recalls. Mazda Canada also runs service campaigns, which it says "may be issued to address vehicle concerns that do not directly affect the safety or emissions performance of the vehicle."

Ask Mazda about those separately, as the VIN section below explains.

Transport Canada lists the CX-50 as a separate model from the CX-5. A notice that names only the CX-50 is not a CX-5 recall, so search by model CX-5.

Every 2020 to 2025 CX-5 belongs to the second generation, which Mazda Canada introduced with the 2017 CX-5. Mazda Canada describes the 2026 CX-5 as an all-new third generation, so 2020 to 2025 is one generation.

If a Nissan is on your list too, our guide to Nissan Rogue reliability by year reads the Rogue's recall record the same way.

What the Recall Record Shows on Mazda CX-5 Reliability by Year

Where the Mazda CX-5 Is Good on a Highway 401 Commute

Mazda Canada's own announcements give the 2020 to 2025 CX-5 real strengths for a 401 commute. It made i-Activ AWD standard on every CX-5 from 2022, and its 2021, 2024 and 2025 announcements list Smart City Brake Support Front and Rear Cross Traffic Alert among the standard i-Activsense safety features.

Those strengths come from Mazda's own information, not from us.

On all-wheel drive, Mazda Canada's 2022 announcement says the i-Activ AWD system "continuously monitors weight transfer, based on acceleration and cornering forces, and shifts power to the appropriate wheels, providing drivers a near instant response to inputs."

For a slushy morning run to Kingston, that is the part of the CX-5 that matters most.

The 2022 CX-5 also got suspension updates that Mazda Canada said "help suppress unpleasant vibrations, reduce road noise, and help to provide a quieter cabin and higher quality of ride comfort." On a daily highway commute, a quieter cabin is something you notice every trip.

For stop-and-go traffic, Mazda Canada added Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop&Go to the 2021.5 GX as standard. Its 2024 and 2025 announcements list radar cruise control with stop and go as standard too.

For 2024, Mazda Canada says "All CX-5 models are paired with a quick-shifting six-speed automatic transmission with manual mode and sport mode."

None of that makes any used CX-5 a sure thing. It makes the individual vehicle the thing to check.

Where the Mazda CX-5 Is Good on a Highway 401 Commute

The Mazda CX-5 Year by Year From 2020 to 2025

The 2020 to 2025 CX-5 is one generation, and Mazda Canada's own information shows what changed by year, chiefly drivetrain and standard safety equipment.

Read Mazda CX-5 reliability by year here as an equipment checklist, not a ranking, and confirm every item on the vehicle itself.

2020 Mazda CX-5

Mazda Canada's 2020 CX-5 specifications sheet lists "Front-wheel drive (standard on GX, GS)" and "All-wheel drive (optional on GX, GS; standard on GT and Signature)". The sheet also says its information "is subject to change without notice".

So a 2020 GX or GS may be front-wheel drive, and the drivetrain has to be confirmed on that vehicle.

The sheet names three engines. The Skyactiv-G 2.5 is on the GX, the Skyactiv-G 2.5 with Cylinder Deactivation on the GS and GT, and the Skyactiv-G 2.5 T with Dynamic Pressure Turbo on the Signature and as a GT option.

Confirm which i-Activsense safety features a 2020 carries on the vehicle itself, because this guide does not list them for that year.

2021 Mazda CX-5 and the 2021.5 Update

Mazda Canada's 2021 announcement says the CX-5 "comes standard with the brand's most essential i-Activsense safety features, including Smart City Brake Support Front, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert."

It describes the GX with front-wheel drive as standard, and says Mazda's i-Activ all-wheel drive "is offered on all trim levels".

The GT came with the naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G 2.5 engine and offered the Skyactiv-G 2.5 Turbo as an option. The Turbo was standard on the Signature.

Mazda Canada then published a 2021.5 mid-year update. It listed front-wheel drive only on the GX and GS, with every other trim listed in i-Activ AWD.

It also says the 2021.5 GX "adds Mazda's i-Activsense safety technology as standard equipment", including Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop&Go, Smart Brake Support Front, Pedestrian Detection, Lane-keep Assist System and Lane Departure Warning System.

The model year alone will not tell you which equipment a 2021 CX-5 has. Confirm its drivetrain and safety features on that vehicle.

2022 Mazda CX-5

Mazda Canada's 2022 announcement says Mazda "will make i-Activ all-wheel drive (AWD) standard across the CX-5 lineup", and its 2022 brochure lists "i-Activ AWD (All models)".

The 2022 model also introduced Mazda Intelligent Drive Select, or Mi-Drive, along with the suspension updates described above.

Mazda Canada's 2022 brochure lists "Pedestrian Detection (forward sensing)" with the footnote "Standard on all models." It also prints that "i-Activsense safety features are not a substitute for safe and attentive driving."

2023 Mazda CX-5

Mazda Canada's 2023 announcement says "CX-5 models retain standard i-Activ all-wheel drive in Canada".

It says the GX gained the Skyactiv-G 2.5 four-cylinder engine with cylinder deactivation as standard equipment, and that the Sport Design "offers an optional Skyactiv-G 2.5T turbocharged engine".

Confirm the i-Activsense safety features on a 2023 on the vehicle itself, because this guide does not list them for that year.

2024 Mazda CX-5

Mazda Canada's 2024 announcement says "all 2024 CX-5 models will retain standard i-ACTIV all-wheel drive in Canada", and that i-Stop technology was new for the 2024 GX.

It lists Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Smart Brake Support Front, Smart City Brake Support Front, Pedestrian Detection (forward sensing), Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist as standard features carried over to the 2024 model year.

2025 Mazda CX-5

Mazda Canada's 2025 announcement says "2025 CX-5 models will include standard all-wheel drive", and that Mi-Drive "is standard, and features Normal, Off-Road, and Sport Modes."

It lists standard i-Activsense safety and driver assistance features including eight airbags, Blind Spot Monitoring, Smart City Brake Support Front, Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keep Assist, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Smart Brake Support Front.

The 2025 was the last model year of this generation. Mazda Canada describes the 2026 CX-5 as all-new.

The Mazda CX-5 Year by Year From 2020 to 2025

Which CX-5 Years and Trims Have All-Wheel Drive for Eastern Ontario Winters

Every 2022 to 2025 CX-5 that Mazda Canada sold new came with all-wheel drive as standard. A 2020 or 2021 CX-5 GX or GS may be front-wheel drive, so confirm the drivetrain on that vehicle from its window sticker, build record or a VIN check with a Mazda retailer.

For the daily run to Kingston and rural roads before the plow has been through, that one check decides which CX-5 belongs on your shortlist.

Model year

All-wheel drive as Mazda Canada published it

2020

Front-wheel drive standard on GX and GS, all-wheel drive optional on them, all-wheel drive standard on GT and Signature

2021

Front-wheel drive standard on GX, i-Activ AWD offered on all trim levels

2021.5 update

Front-wheel drive listed on GX and GS only, every other trim i-Activ AWD

2022

i-Activ AWD standard on all CX-5 models

2023

i-Activ AWD standard on all CX-5 models

2024

i-ACTIV AWD standard on all CX-5 models

2025

All-wheel drive standard on all CX-5 models

Mazda's CX-5 owner's manual says "Use snow tires on all 4 wheels".

Our own advice from an Eastern Ontario dealership is that all-wheel drive helps a CX-5 get moving on a snowy concession road. It does not help it stop or steer, which is the job of the tires.

If the CX-5 you choose comes without a winter set, ask about our Winter Tire Package.

How to Check a Used CX-5 for Recalls and Service Campaigns by VIN

Check a used CX-5 in two places before you buy. Mazda Canada's Recall Information Centre at mazdarecalls.ca takes the Vehicle Identification Number and shows "open and completed recalls and applicable SSPs", and Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database gives each notice in its own words.

Mazda Canada says its search tool "does not support any other campaign types." For the complete list of service campaigns that apply to a vehicle, it tells owners to contact a Mazda retailer or its Customer Assistance Centre.

Mazda Canada says "Recall repairs are completed at no cost to you." It says service campaigns "may be completed at no cost to you, depending on the specific campaign and its terms."

Its tool also says it "contains information for vehicles purchased and serviced in Canada only." On a used CX-5, ask where it was first sold.

On Transport Canada's database, search make Mazda, model CX-5 and the model year. The CX-50 is listed as a separate model, and its notices are not CX-5 notices.

Do both before you buy, and again ahead of each winter, because new recalls can be added.

What an Ontario Dealer Must Disclose in Writing

In Ontario, OMVIC's Disclosures Guideline says dealers and salespeople must disclose material facts about the vehicles "even if the consumer does not ask." It describes a material fact as information that "might affect the consumer's decision".

It also says "Providing disclosure verbally does not meet the requirements of the Act." Ask for the disclosures in writing, then run the VIN yourself.

What a Safety Standards Certificate Does and Does Not Tell You

Ontario's page says a Safety Standards Certificate "confirms that your vehicle met the minimum safety standards on the date the certificate was issued." It also says "It is not a warranty or guarantee of the vehicle's condition."

Treat it as the minimum, not as an inspection of how a CX-5 has handled its winters.

What to Inspect on a Used CX-5 After Salted Leeds and Grenville Winters

After winters on salted Leeds and Grenville roads and the 401, check a used CX-5's underbody, drain holes, brake lines, brakes, drivetrain and tires, alongside its VIN check.

The underbody points come from Mazda's CX-5 owner's manual. The rest is our advice from an Eastern Ontario dealership, not a claim about how CX-5s in particular hold up.

Underbody, Fuel Lines and Drain Holes

Mazda's CX-5 owner's manual says road chemicals and salt "may collect on the underbody". It says that if they are not removed, "they will speed up rusting and deterioration of such underbody parts as fuel lines, frame, floor pan, and exhaust system, even though these parts may be coated with anti-corrosive material."

The same manual says to "Thoroughly flush the underbody and wheel housings with lukewarm or cold water at the end of each winter." Ask whether that was done, and look underneath with a good light or on a hoist.

It also says "The lower edges of doors, rocker panels, and frame members have drain holes that should not be clogged. Water trapped there will cause rusting."

What to look at:

  • The fuel lines, frame and floor pan, the parts Mazda's manual names.

  • The exhaust system, its hangers and its heat shields.

  • The drain holes along the lower door edges, rocker panels and frame members.

  • The inner wheel wells.

Light surface rust on underbody parts is normal on a vehicle that has lived here. Flaking, soft or holed metal on a structural part is not.

Brake Lines and Brakes

Mazda's manual does not name brake lines, so this one is our advice rather than Mazda's. Have the brake lines and their fittings along the underbody looked at on any used vehicle that has lived through salted winters.

That is not a claim that CX-5 brake lines corrode. Check the pads, the rotor surfaces and the parking brake too, and ask when the brakes were last serviced.

What Mazda's Rust Warranty Does and Does Not Cover

Mazda Canada's warranty booklets for the 2020 to 2025 model years include an Anti-Perforation Limited Warranty against perforation "(hole through the body panel) due to corrosion of the body sheet metal panels".

The 2020 and 2025 booklets say its period "begins on the Date of First Service", so whether a used CX-5 is still inside it depends on that date. Ask for the vehicle's documents.

Those same booklets exclude "Any surface corrosion of the Mazda Vehicle which does not result in perforation, such as that typically caused by sand, salt, saltpeter/nitre, hail or stones."

The 2021 to 2025 booklets also exclude corrosion of parts that are not a body sheet metal panel, and they specifically exclude exhaust system parts from that term. The warranty is no substitute for an underbody inspection.

Matching Tires

Mazda's CX-5 owner's manual says "Use only the same size and type tires (snow, radial, or non-radial) on all 4 wheels", so check that all four match. Ask whether a second set of wheels and winter tires comes with it.

Our guide on when to put winter tires on in Ontario covers timing the swap, so the CX-5 is ready before the first cold snap.

A Highway Test Drive and a Pre-Purchase Inspection

Drive it on the 401 at highway speed, not only around the block, and watch the dash from the moment it starts. On a 2020 or 2021 GX or GS, confirm the drivetrain on the same visit.

Then have a technician look it over before you sign, and get the findings in writing.

A Used Ford Escape or Bronco Sport for the Same Commute

If you are cross-shopping compact SUVs, a used Ford Escape or Ford Bronco Sport deserves a test drive on the same commute. This guide makes no claim that either is more reliable than a CX-5, and both get the same VIN check, underbody inspection and drivetrain confirmation.

Ford Canada's 2025 Escape page reads "While the Escape has reached the end of its journey, its spirit of innovation lives on in our dynamic vehicle lineup."

On any used Escape or Bronco Sport, confirm the drivetrain from the vehicle's own documents, exactly as you would on a 2020 or 2021 CX-5.

If a small pickup is on your list for the same drive, our guide to the Ford Maverick hybrid with all-wheel drive on a Highway 401 commute covers it from the commuter's side.

The choice comes down to fit, feel and how the individual vehicle checks out. Drive them back to back, CX-5 and Ford, on the road you actually commute.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Mazda CX-5 years should I avoid

No Transport Canada or Mazda Canada source names a CX-5 year to avoid, so this guide does not either. When we searched Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database on September 18, 2026, it listed no recalls for the 2020 to 2025 Mazda CX-5.

That is a dated search result, not a verdict on any year. For a winter commute, the year question that matters is drivetrain, because a 2020 or 2021 GX or GS may be front-wheel drive.

Does the Mazda CX-5 have known issues

This guide uses Transport Canada's recall record and Mazda's own information, not third-party ratings or complaint lists. When we searched Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database on September 18, 2026, it listed no recalls for the 2020 to 2025 Mazda CX-5.

Mazda Canada also runs service campaigns for concerns that do not directly affect safety or emissions performance. Enter the VIN at mazdarecalls.ca, and ask a Mazda retailer or Mazda's Customer Assistance Centre for the complete list of campaigns that apply to that vehicle.

Is every used Mazda CX-5 all-wheel drive

No. Mazda Canada listed front-wheel drive as standard on the 2020 GX and GS and on the 2021 GX, and for the 2021.5 update it listed front-wheel drive only on the GX and GS.

It made i-Activ AWD standard on every CX-5 from 2022, so on a 2020 or 2021 GX or GS, confirm the drivetrain on the vehicle.

How do I check a used Mazda CX-5 for recalls

Enter the VIN at mazdarecalls.ca, Mazda Canada's Recall Information Centre, and search Transport Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database by make, model and year, choosing CX-5 rather than CX-50. Mazda Canada says "Recall repairs are completed at no cost to you."

Do both before you buy, and again ahead of each winter, because new recalls can be added.
