Ford Canada's guide splits Ford dashboard symbols and meanings into two groups: warning lamps "alert you to a vehicle condition that may become serious", and indicator lights "show you when a feature is being used".
For warning lamps, Ford's rule is short: "If the warning light is orange or red, it means your vehicle is experiencing a problem and should be promptly taken to a Ford Dealer."
Ford adds: "When the light is yellow, service may be required, and you should have a dealer inspect your vehicle."
For indicator lights, Ford's note reads: "When a light on your dashboard is green or blue, it means that a vehicle feature is being used or has been activated."
You will see a tidy red, amber and green rule on plenty of websites. Ford Canada's page does not say red means stop, and it groups orange with red, not with yellow.

Ford names the lamp "Engine or Motor Coolant Temperature". On a loaded truck on Highway 401 or a gravel concession road, that wording leaves no room for driving it home first.
Once the engine is off and cool, the next question is why the lamp came on. Ford's guide says "To understand which vehicle code is causing a light to turn on, contact your Ford Dealer."
Engine Oil
Ford Canada's guide says: "If it illuminates with the engine running or when you are driving, this indicates a system error. Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so and switch the engine off."
Ford adds: "Check the engine oil level."
Ford's note on this lamp says: "Do not resume your journey if it illuminates despite the level being correct. Have the system checked by a Ford Dealer immediately."
Ford ties this lamp to a system error, not to when your next oil change is due. If the level reads correct and the lamp is still on, the truck stays put.
On either the coolant or the oil lamp, the job site can wait.
Powertrain Fault
Ford says this lamp "illuminates when the system detects a powertrain or a four-wheel drive (4WD)/all-wheel drive (AWD) fault." The four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive part applies to vehicles that have them.
Ford adds: "We do not recommend you drive while this light is illuminated. Contact a Ford Dealer as soon as possible."

Ford Canada's guide says: "If the lamp illuminates when you are moving, you may have the parking brake applied. Make sure the parking brake is off."
Ford adds: "Have your vehicle checked by a Ford Dealer as soon as possible if the lamp continues to illuminate."
Ford's guide also warns: "Driving your vehicle with the warning lamp on is dangerous. A significant decrease in braking performance may occur."

The Low Tire Pressure Warning on a Cold Morning
Ford Canada's guide says of the low tire pressure warning: "It illuminates when the tire pressure is low. If the lamp remains on with the engine running or when driving, check the tire pressure as soon as possible."
Ford adds that the lamp comes on briefly when you switch the ignition on, and "If it does not illuminate when you switch the ignition on or begins to flash at any time, have the system checked by a Ford Dealer."
The cold is where Transport Canada comes in, not Ford. Transport Canada says "A tire that has good pressure when checked in a warm garage will be under-inflated when it's below zero outside."
It adds: "Tire pressure goes down in the cold, which is why you should do your checks when the tires are cold."
So tires that checked out fine in a heated shop can be under-inflated after a night below zero in an Augusta driveway.
What Ford says to do when the light comes on:
Check the pressure and inflate "to the Ford-recommended tire pressure", as Ford Canada's tire pressure monitoring page puts it.
Find that pressure on the "Tire Label inside the driver's door of your vehicle or your Owner's Manual".
Check with a gauge when the tires are cold, which is when Transport Canada says to do it.
Ford is clear that the light is not the whole job: "The tire pressure monitoring system is not a substitute for manually checking tire pressures."

Ford Canada's guide says the stability control light "flashes when the system is active." Ford adds: "If it remains illuminated or does not illuminate when you switch the ignition on, this indicates a system error."
On wet leaves or the first slush on a back road near Lyn, that is the difference to watch for. By Ford's description, flashing means the system is active.
A light that stays on is different. Ford says that during a system error "the system switches off", and to have it checked by a Ford Dealer "immediately".
On a slick back road, a steady light means you are driving without stability control until it is fixed.
There is also a separate Stability Control Off lamp. Ford says it "illuminates when you switch the Stability Control System off" and "turns off when you switch the system back on or when you switch the ignition off."
The Battery Light While You Drive
Ford Canada's guide says: "If it illuminates while driving and indicates a system error, switch off all unnecessary electrical equipment and have the system checked by a Ford Dealer immediately."
On a work truck, that means the work lights and anything plugged into the truck go off, and the truck comes in.

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
Ford Canada's guide says: "If it illuminates when you are driving and indicates a system error, you continue to have the normal braking (without ABS) unless the brake system warning lamp also illuminates. Have the system checked by a Ford Dealer immediately."
If the brake system warning lamp comes on with it, Ford's warning on that lamp applies.
Service Engine Soon
Ford Canada's entry says it "illuminates when you switch the ignition on prior to engine start to check the bulb and to indicate whether your vehicle is ready for Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) testing."
Ford says that normally it "automatically turns off if no system errors are present" once the engine starts.
Ford also says: "If after 15 seconds it flashes 8 times, this indicates that your vehicle is not ready for Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) testing."
That is Ford's Inspection and Maintenance readiness check, a different thing from a light that continuously flashes.
Ford's entry goes on: "If it illuminates when the engine is running this indicates the On-Board Diagnostics system has detected an error in the vehicle emission control system. Contact your Ford Dealer."
For a light that keeps flashing, Ford says: "If it continuously flashes, an engine misfire may be occurring. Continuing to drive your vehicle may cause reduced power or the engine to stop."
Ford also warns: "Failure to respond to the warning lamp may cause component damage not covered by the vehicle warranty."
Ford adds: "Have your vehicle checked as soon as possible. See your Ford Dealer to find out what the codes mean."
If the truck was recently serviced somewhere and the light is still on, Ford's guide says: "If your vehicle has been recently serviced and your engine light remains on, contact your Ford Dealer."
Front Airbag
